Tamiami/Biscayne Dental: Sedation Dentistry

From the moment you walk into our office to the time spent in our chair, your experience at our dental office should be completely relaxed. However, upwards of 15 percent of American adults experience dental anxiety. Luckily, with sedation dentistry, even those who fear the dentist can get comfortable and receive the dental care their oral health requires.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry utilizes medication to help anxious patients rest easy while undergoing dental care. This can be extremely useful for simple, regular cleanings and more involved procedures.

Together, the patient and our knowledgeable dentist will discuss the goal of sedation dentistry and determine the best plan of action. From there, the health and wellbeing of the patients under sedation will be monitored to ensure optimal comfort and safety.

What Types of Sedation Dentistry are Available?

Depending on the severity of dental anxiety or phobia, there are varying degrees of sedation dentistry. The stages range from a minimal sedation, where the patient is awake but relaxed, to general anesthesia when the patient is completely unconscious. The types of sedation available include:

Nitrous Oxide: This is “laughing gas” and provide a gentle relaxation that wears off by the end of the visit. This means you are fully aware and capable of driving yourself home.

Oral Sedation: This can range from mild to moderate sedation. This is when a medication is administered at the proper dosage in pill form. The patient will feel groggy and may even fall asleep on some occasions.

IV Sedation: Intravenous sedation is a deeper sedation that still keeps the patient awake but less aware. This is typically used in more severe cases of anxiety or for more intensive procedures. You will not be able to drive yourself home due to recovery time.

General Anesthesia: This is the highest form of sedation dentistry, as the patient is asleep during the procedure. The patient’s health is carefully watched throughout the entire duration, and recovery time is necessary after administration.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

The benefits of sedation dentistry are truly life changing. With sedation dentistry, even those with dental anxiety and fear can receive the dental care they need without stress or worry. This can lead to a healthy and happy smile!
