A Type of Periodontal Disease Might Be Causing Atherosclerosis

Periodontal health and overall health

We all know that proper oral care is important for your smile. At Biscayne Dental Center, we believe that oral health is vital for overall health and happiness. A recent study published in PLOS Pathogens seems to agree with us. It seems as if porphyromonas gingival (a type of periodontal disease pathogen) causes more than just unhealthy teeth and tooth loss. This pathogen is now associated to an increased risk of atherosclerosis: chronic inflammation in the blood vessels.

The only way to get gum disease (or periodontal disease) under control is to visit a dental professional on a regular basis. Your health depends on it.

This year, it seems like a new study finds a link between overall health and oral health every month. Heart health, immune systems, and even complications with diabetes can all be affected by poor oral health. Periodontal or “gum” disease is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. At Biscayne Dental Center, we have professionals on-staff to help diagnose and treat gum disease of all severities.

Periodontal disease is consistently being linked to heart health issues. Even osteoporosis and and increased risks of stroke are beginning to be associated with severe gum disease. Unfortunately, gum disease is incredibly, incredibly common. That doesn’t mean it has to be.

Preventing gum disease is all about maintaining proper oral health. This means more than brushing, more than flossing, more than even mouthwash! Visiting a dentist office at least once every six months is essential in preventing gum disease.

Puss between gums and teeth

Chronic halitosis

Inflamed gums

Red-colored gums

Receding gums

Excessive bleeding when brushing or flossing
